Choosing the Right Flooring For your Home

By Darren McCoy

No matter whether you personally live in your home or have rental properties, one of the key decisions you’ll need to make is what type of flooring is necessary.

After all, there are so many different options available that it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choice unless you know exactly what you’re looking for.

Here are some factors to think about when choosing the perfect flooring for your property.

What’s the area used for?

The first step is to think about the primary use of the space. For example, areas with high foot traffic will need a durable type of flooring that won’t easily show signs of wear.

Meanwhile, spaces such as the kitchen and bathroom need something that is water resistant, so that pretty much eliminates carpet from the outset!

If you choose carpet for other rooms in your home, think carefully about the colour. Paler shades will show dirt more easily, but at the same time can make a space seem bigger.

What will I need to do to maintain it?

Some flooring types require regular maintenance, so ask yourself if you’re up to the task of doing it.

Polished hardwood floors, for example, will need special care and attention to keep them looking in top condition. Carpets require regular vacuuming, while vinyl and tiles should be mopped every so often.

What would I be most comfortable with?

The flooring you choose will have more of an impact on the look and feel of a room than you first think, so making the right decision is essential.

Tiled floors are perfect if you live in a hotter part of the country, as they don’t retain heat as well as laminates or carpets. These might be better options if you experience particularly harsh winters.

It’s also worth thinking about your individual style. There are certain floor coverings that will look more modern or traditional than others, so make a choice that best reflects your personality.

Someone in my house has allergies – what should I avoid?

Carpets aren’t the best option if there’s someone in your household who suffers from pet allergies. They tend to attract fur and hair, which can prove especially difficult to get rid of.

Hardwood floors, tiles and laminates are much easier to keep allergen-free, as they can be swept or mopped without too much difficulty.
